This segment from the June 11, 2010, episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” features Shauna Sanford’s interview with shrimper Clarence Duplessis of Pointe A La Hache on his boat, the “Miss Bonnie,” in Breton Sound. He discusses: the uncertainty caused by the ongoing BP Oil Spill; the difficulties faced by shrimpers due to the closure of several waterways; BP not prioritizing the hiring of local fishermen through their Vessels of Opportunity program; the possibility that he will no longer be able to make his living as a shrimper; his fading confidence in BP; and the difficulty of dealing with a problem with no clear solutions. This report also features highlights from the first field hearing held by a Congressional Subcommittee on Oversights and Investigations in Chalmette, including testimony by Duplessis, Natalie Roshto, the widow of an oil rig worker killed in the Deepwater Horizon explosion, and Dr. Moby Solangi of the Institute of Marine Mammal Services.
