This segment from the January 7, 2011, episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” features Charlie Whinham’s report on the opening of a no-kill animal shelter at the Dixon Correctional Institute in East Feliciana Parish. Whinham reports that the prison received a $600,000 grant from the Humane Society to open the shelter. Whinham interviews: Warden Steve Rader on the prison’s role as an overflow animal shelter following Hurricane Katrina; Lieutenant Colonel John Smith on the impact of caring for the animals on the inmates and the training they receive from the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine; and inmate James Zeigler on his work with the animals.
