This segment from the February 4, 2011, episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” features producer Michael Farrar’s report on the upcoming National Institute of Health (NIH) studies on the potential health effects of the BP Oil Spill on clean-up workers. Farrar interviews Dr. Edward Trapido of the LSU Health Sciences Center in New Orleans, a lead researcher on one of the studies, about the unique aspects of this study, his concerns over the chemical exposure experienced by clean-up workers, and the importance of long-term monitoring in determining the overall health effects. He also talks to Dr. Luann White, a toxicologist with the Department of Health and Hospitals (DHH), about the effect of heat and humidity on the clean-up effort and the potential mental health effects of the oil spill.
