This segment from the June 24, 2011, episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” features producer Jeremy Alford’s report on the budget cuts facing the Louisiana Geological Survey (LGS), which is located on the Louisiana State University campus in Baton Rouge. Alford interviews: Chacko John, the director, on the current LSU budget eliminating funding for LGS in 2014; Robert Paulsell, a research associate, on his work in mapping the oil and gas pipelines between Baton Rouge and New Orleans; John E. Johnston III, the assistant director, on LGS’s role in streamlining the oil and gas permitting process and recommending the exploration plans that are least harmful to the environment; and John Snead, a cartographic manager, on the LGS’s role in providing maps for the Hurricane Katrina recovery effort.
