This segment from the August 24, 2012, episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” features Shauna Sanford’s report on the ongoing dispute between Justice Bernette Johnson and Justice Jeffrey Victory over who holds seniority and will become the next Chief Justice of the Louisiana Supreme Court. Sanford reports that Johnson was elected to the Supreme Court in 1994 to a new seat created through a federal consent decree. Sanford also leads an in-studio panel discussion on the topic with the following guests: Alanah Odoms-Hebert, an attorney for Justice Johnson; Ed Dawson, a constitutional law professor at LSU; and Julie Baxter, an attorney. They discuss: Justice Johnson filing a lawsuit in federal court; whether this issue should be resolved in federal or state court; the legal community’s response to the controversy; and the issue of race in the dispute.
