Description
This segment from the October 12, 2012, episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” features Shauna Sanford’s report on the impact of the Louisiana State University System’s plan to either close or reduce the services at seven LSU hospitals in south Louisiana. Sanford reports that the LSU System plans to lay-off 1,500 employees. This report includes footage of people protesting the closure of Southeast Hospital in Mandeville. Sanford also interviews Dr. Paul Perkowski, a vascular surgeon and a member of the Louisiana State Medical Society. He discusses: his concern over the possible lack of training positions available to medical students and doctors in the state; the impact of the closures and reduced services on both insured and uninsured patients; and physicians’ concerns over the lack of outpatient clinics for uninsured patients. Hosts: Charlie Whinham and Shauna Sanford
