Description
This segment from the October 18, 2013, episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” features Charlie Whinham’s story on Marine Corporal James “Penu” Green, who died in 1974. Whinham interviews Greg Green, Penu’s son, Mandy Green, Penu’s daughter-in-law, and Desiree and Aaron Green, Penu’s grandchildren, about their discovery of Green’s service in the Montford Point Marines in World War II, the first unit of African Americans to serve in the United States Marine Corps. This story also features footage of Green’s widow, Ruby Green, accepting his Congressional Gold Medal, the nation’s highest civilian honor, in a ceremony in Baton Rouge on October 16, 2013.
