This segment from the October 23, 2015, episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” features Charlie Whinham’s report on football safety. Whinham reports on the recent death of high school football player Tyrell Cameron in Franklin Parish and the paralyzing injury to Southern University football player Devon Gales. He interviews Dr. Rani Whitfield, a sports medicine physician, who discusses his advice to parents concerned about the safety of football. Whinham also meets with Jack Marucci, the head athletic trainer at LSU, and Curtis Cruz, the president of the Head Health Network, at the LSU football practice facility in Baton Rouge. They discuss their development of a helmet with impact-sensing smart fabric that measures hits to the head of football players and their hope to change the culture around football and head injuries.
