Description
This segment from the January 27, 2017, episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” features Charlie Whinham’s visit to Glen Oaks Park Elementary School in Baton Rouge to check in on their recovery efforts following the August 2016 floods. Whinham reports that the school is currently housed at the former location of Banks Elementary School while their campus is being rebuilt. He interviews: Assistant Principal Tonya Bethly; Principal Bernard Williams; Brittany Dyer, 2nd grade teacher; RuShonda Moore, Special Education teacher; and Jamie Johnson, 5th grade teacher. They discuss how the students and faculty are coping with the move to a new school with fewer resources, as well as their successes and challenges in the ongoing flood recovery. Whinham also interviews O’Neil Curtis of O’Neil’s Barber and Beauty Salon as he provides a free haircut to a Glen Oaks Park student while the student reads him a book.
