This segment from the February 17, 2017, episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” features Charlie Whinham’s visit to the Marie Therese Coincoin Day festivities at the Badin-Roque House at the Cane River National Heritage Area in Natchitoches Parish. Coincoin was a freed slave and the matriarch of the Metoyer Family and the Cane River Creoles. This story includes highlights of Betty Metoyer-Roque, a seventh generation descendent, recounting the life of Coincoin. Whinham also interviews: Kelly Jackson, a descendent and founder of the Resurrection Fern Foundation; Thomas E. Roque, Sr., a descendent and member of the St. Augustine Historical Society; and Dr. Pete Gregory, a professor at Northwestern State University in Natchitoches.
