Description

This episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” from May 1, 2020, features Andre Moreau and Natasha Williams reporting on the latest news on the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic in Louisiana. Moreau first reports on the week’s headlines, including highlights from Governor John Bel Edwards’ meeting with President Donald Trump at the White House. Next, Moreau interviews Robert Travis Scott, the president of the Public Affairs Research Council (PAR), who discusses the key questions that the state must consider before reopening the economy. Williams then interviews Jalyne Landry, the sister of Roderick Martinez, a 41-year-old from Breaux Bridge who died from COVID-19. She discusses: her brother’s difficulty in getting a COVID-19 diagnosis; her hope to put a face on the pandemic to encourage everyone to take the necessary precautions; and her family not getting the chance to say good-bye to her brother. Next, Williams interviews Zonda Barnes, a licensed aesthetician in Baton Rouge, who discusses her decision to donate $30,000 of skincare products to help health care workers with skin problems caused by wearing personal protective equipment (PPE). Moreau then reports on the work of the Spirited Stitchers, a volunteer group from the First United Methodist Church in Baton Rouge who are sewing and donating cloth masks. He interviews Mary Kay Carleton, Margaret Tyler, and Caroline Tyler. Next, Moreau and Williams announce the 2020 Louisiana Young Heroes. Lastly, Moreau presents highlights of the military flyover at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge in honor of health care workers.
