This segment from the August 28, 2020, episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” features Natasha Williams’ report on the 15th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. She interviews retired Lieutenant General Russel Honore, the commander of Joint Task Force Katrina, who discusses the improvements made to infrastructure and emergency management since Hurricane Katrina and his concerns about the vulnerability of the wetlands. Williams also interviews Charles Allen, the community engagement director for the National Audubon Society, who discusses the importance of maintaining the levee system built after Hurricane Katrina, the state’s coastal restoration efforts, and the need for coastal Louisiana residents to have a hurricane evacuation plan.
