This segment from the July 8, 2022, episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” features a special report on mass shootings. Kara St. Cyr first reports on the history of mass shootings in the United States dating back to the 1997 mass shooting at Columbine High School in Colorado. She interviews Kaitlyn Joshua, the faith organizer with the Power Coalition for Equity and Justice. Andre Moreau then presents highlights of United States Senator Bill Cassidy discussing his support for the bipartisan gun legislation known as the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act on the Senate floor. Next, Moreau interviews Dr. Pearson Cross, the director of the School of Behavioral and Social Sciences at the University of Louisiana at Monroe. He discusses the passage of the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act and the politics surrounding the gun control debate in Congress. Lastly, Moreau conducts an in-studio interview with Leslie Todd, a psychotherapist with Strategies for Change. She discusses the characteristics of mass shooters and the warning signs.
