An oral history interview conducted on September 12, 2017, with Jerry Shirley of DeRidder, Louisiana. Shirley served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He discusses: training dogs at Fort Benning, Georgia; being assigned to the 34th Infantry Platoon Scout Dog unit in Vietnam; his role in walking point with his dog for infantry companies in the jungle during the most dangerous missions; what the dogs were trained to alert on; and returning home.
