After enduring the loss of her parents and grandmother, Nelson is in the custody of her older sister. Despite her personal losses, she is an outstanding student in the Academy of Engineering curriculum at Scotlandville. She is also a leader in several clubs, including the National Society of Black Engineers, the MoonBuggy team, I Care, and Girls in Engineering, Math, and Science.
