This episode of the series “Algebra for Teachers” from 1990 features Dr. Carolyn Talton leading an in-service training for teachers as a part of the Satellite Educational Research Consortium (SERC). Next, she presents a clip of algebra teacher Lorinda DeVries teaching the steps to solving word problems and how to write equations to her ninth-grade students at Baton Rouge Magnet High School. Lastly, Dr. Talton interviews Dr. Dan Dupree, a math consultant for the series and retired dean of the College of Pure and Applied Sciences at Northeast Louisiana University in Monroe, who discusses the importance of teaching students the language of numbers.
