This episode of the series “Algebra for Teachers” from 1990 features Dr. Carolyn Talton leading an in-service training for teachers as a part of the Satellite Educational Research Consortium (SERC). She first presents examples of positive and negative numbers and a clip from LPB’s “Power of Algebra” series. She then interviews Dr. Judy Pippen, an algebra teacher from Natchitoches, who discusses how she teaches the concept of positive and negative numbers in her classroom. Dr. Talton also presents examples of solving problems with positive and negative numbers. Lastly, she presents a clip of algebra teacher Lorinda DeVries teaching the multiplication and division of negative numbers to her ninth-grade students at Baton Rouge Magnet High School.
