Description

Karen LeBlanc and Barry Erwin of the Council for a Better Louisiana (CABL) moderate a live debate from the LPB Studios in Baton Rouge on September 28, 2023, between five of the candidates for Governor: Stephen Waguespack (R), former head of the Louisiana Association of Business and Industry (LABI); Dr. Shawn Wilson (D), the former secretary of the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development; State Senator Sharon Hewitt (R); Hunter Lundy (I), attorney; and State Treasurer John Schroder (R). Attorney General Jeff Landry (R) declined his invitation to participate. Three journalists, Kara St. Cyr of LPB, Greg Hilburn of the USA Today Network and Julie O’Donoghue of the Louisiana Illuminator, ask the candidates questions on the following topics: improving the education and skills of the state’s adult population to meet workforce needs; early childhood education; diversifying the state’s energy sector; the insurance crisis; crime prevention; meeting greenhouse gas reduction goals and funding coastal projects; and inclusivity legislation. The debate ends with each candidate’s closing statement. This debate is a part of The Way Forward: Election 2023 series.
