This episode of “Gumbo! La! La!” from May 2, 2004, explores Cajun French culture in the Atchafalaya Basin region of Louisiana. Host Marie-Jo Therio discovers Cajun French heritage through the eyes and life experience of local South Louisiana residents. Marie-Jo speaks with Herbert Wiltz, a Creole French educator. They discuss his work advocating for Creole speakers in South Louisiana and how race relations have impacted the spread of Creole. She also speaks with other Creole French locals, who discuss how the language has impacted their lives. This program was preserved through a 2022-2023 Public Broadcasting Preservation Fellowship.
