This program from May 18, 1991, features Robert Collins and Karen Nachman hosting LPB’s live coverage of “Louisiana Honors Its Own,” a homecoming celebration at the Governor’s Mansion in Baton Rouge for the Louisiana troops who served in Operation Desert Storm. Master of Ceremonies Bob Courtney leads the program inside the Governor’s Mansion, including: a performance of the National Anthem by Charmaine Neville; a dedication by Rabbi Barry Weinstein; an offering of the Lord’s Prayer by Reverends John Fellows, T.J. Jemison, Benjamin Maxon, and T.F. Tenney; a speech by Governor Buddy Roemer; a speech by United States Secretary of Defense Dick Cheney; a performance of “God Bless the USA” by Amie Noelle Comeaux; Colonel Dave Sawyer of England Air Force Base presenting an American flag carried on the first day of Operation Desert Storm to Governor Roemer; a benediction by Bishop Stanley Ott of the Diocese of Baton Rouge; and a musical salute by the 156th Army Band. Following the ceremony, Jeff Duhe interviews: Private Sergio Avila of Fort Polk; HM3 Mike Fontenot, who served on the USS Percy; and Linda Ebert of the Louisiana Red Cross.
