This episode of the series “Louisiana Spotlight” from October 10, 2023, focuses on the major issues of the 2023 Louisiana gubernatorial election. Host Karen LeBlanc leads a panel discussion with: Dr. Albert Samuels, the chairman of the department of political science and geography at Southern University; Dr. Steven Procopio, the president of the Public Affairs Research Council of Louisiana (PAR); and Barry Erwin, the president and CEO of the Council for a Better Louisiana (CABL). They discuss: the Reset Louisiana Initiative spearheaded by PAR, CABL, and the Committee of 100; the concerns of young voters; the dynamics of the gubernatorial election, including Attorney General Jeff Landry’s lack of participation in public forums; the impact of anti-LGBTQ+ legislation on the perception of Louisiana and economic development; improving the state’s tax structure; funding for education at all levels; the looming fiscal cliff; stabilizing the state budget; the perception of Louisiana; and climate change. Throughout the discussion, LeBlanc presents clips from reports on the concerns of young voters, the brain drain, and the fiscal cliff. LeBlanc also presents clips of the six major gubernatorial candidates: Attorney General Jeff Landry; Stephen Waguespack, the former president of the Louisiana Association of Business and Industry (LABI); Dr. Shawn Wilson, the former secretary of the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development; State Senator Sharon Hewitt; Hunter Lundy, attorney; and State Treasurer John Schroder.
