This segment from the February 14, 1997, episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” features Jeff Duhe’s report on Governor Mike Foster’s decision to postpone the special session on education, including the vote to extend the one-cent sales tax on food and utilities. His report includes highlights of a press conference with Governor Foster announcing his decision, as well as comments by Senate President Randy Ewing, State Senator John Hainkel, and Commissioner of Administration Mark Drennen. He also interviews: Commissioner Drennen; State Representative Raymond Jetson; State Representative Tony Perkins; and Steve Perry, Governor Foster’s chief of staff. Host Robert Collins then conducts an in-studio interview with Dr. Louann Bierlien, the Governor’s chief education advisor. She discusses the administration’s education proposals and their plans for spending the money generated by the extension of the one-cent sales tax, including teacher pay raises and computers in the classroom.
