This segment from the February 23, 2024, episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” features Kara St. Cyr’s report on the efforts to preserve and uncover the history of Woodland Plantation in LaPlace, the site of the 1811 German Coast Uprising, one of the largest uprisings of enslaved people recorded in the United States. St. Cyr reports that the plantation was purchased by the Descendants Project, the first time the property has been owned by African Americans. She interviews Dr. Joy Banner, the co-founder of the Descendants Project, who discusses their plans for the property.
