Description

Interview with Lawrence A. Chehardy, Jefferson Parish Assessor, on changes in property tax evaluation in the upcoming constitutional convention. Chehardy states that his position is to maintain the homestead exemption at least at its present level with the hopes of an increase sufficient to take care of a uniform statewide level assessment so that the Louisiana homeowner isn't faced with a 100% assessment. Chehardy states they will satisfy the mandates of a recent court decision, but not by virtue of 100% assessment. Chehardy says that there hasn't been any real opposition, although some delegates want a decision in a hurry. He believes that the combined experience of the 64 assessors will assist in providing a solution to present to the constitutional convention that will continue to ensure low assessments and reasonable taxation for Louisiana property owners.
