Interview with Congressman Dave Treen on a fishing industry resolution in Congress and the 1973 Louisiana Constitutional Convention. He states that the nation's fishing industry has gone from number 1 to number 6 in the world, and that a resolution to strengthen the fishing industry has passed in the US Senate. He states that he introduced the resolution in the House with 52 sponsors, and that he testified in favor of in committee hearings. He continues that he is hopeful that the Merchant Marine and Fisheries Committee will be in favor of the resolution and that Congress will adopt it. He explains that specific legislation will be added to the declaration of intent from Congress to do everything necessary to strengthen the fishing industry. He mentions future legislation will involve research, coastal protection from foreign fishing, and financing for fishermen during bad seasons. Treen then speaks about the 1973 Constitutional Convention, in which he states that he believes that politics in Louisiana have improved so that more trust could be placed in the legislature, which could then be watched closely with the increased power granted it by the new constitution that he believes should be adopted. He continues that he doesn't think that the Republican Party has taken a general position on the new constitution, but that the Party is watching the convention very closely. He predicts that the Party will come out with positions as the convention is further along.
